On Sunday night Norton residents around the Katanga area had to scurry into their homes hiding away from a rampaging gang of drunk makorokoza.
By Monday one person had been attacked and killed by the gang.
The victim has been named as Alexander Lala from Ward 7.
Residents said it was like a war in Norton as the gang was wanton in attacking anyone they met on the road.
One victim of the attacks had his fingers cut off by a machete and had to be rushed to Norton Hospital.
This is the second outbreak of such violence following another in the previous week which left several people with huge gashes from machete attacks.
Residents say they are now afraid.
“It’s shocking what is happening in Norton as the makorokoza are operating with wanton abandon.
“The ZRP has been of little help as they are not on the ground to deal with the situation,” said one lady.
Another resident added that there is need for the deployment of soldiers to deal with the miners.
“It’s now scary to live in Norton.
“The Police refuse when asked about these reports and yet these things are happening.
“It would be better for soldiers to be deployed with guns and deal with these people.
“We cannot live peacefully and safely when there are people who can just attack you randomly,” he added.
Norton has a thriving community of makorokoza who are dotted around the mainly rural parts in which they do mining.
However they usually come into the urban parts for leisure activities and have been known to engage in acts of violence wherever they assemble.
