MDC-Khupe Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora has defended the recalling of Harare Mayor Gomba and other recent recalls as above aboard whilst also dismissing allegations of a rift with Acting Vice President Khupe.
Mwonzora said all the decisions had been done in unison with Khupe and other structures of their party.
He said this showed there is unity in the party unlike the picture painted by the media.
“There has been a lot of mainstream and social media reports suggesting that there is infighting in the leadership especially between the Acting President and the Secretary General.
“These reports are just false and malicious. They are calculated to sow seeds of disharmony within the Party.
“There is absolutely no problem between the Acting President Dr Khupe and the Secretary General Senator Douglas Mwonzora.
Mwonzora added that, “regarding the recent recalls of the Harare Mayor and the other councilors, this recommendation came in writing from Harare Province.
“It was fully debated in the Standing Committee on more than one occasion before a resolution was arrived at”, he said.
There have been numerous reports of divisions within the Khupe-led MDC faction with reports that they are fighting for control.
Khupe recently placed herself on the list of those set to replace recalled MP’s in a move which was said to have been unilateral and angered Mwonzora.
Meanwhile the recalling of Harare Mayor Gomba and five other Councilors was said to have been Mwonzora’s own independent decision.
This week resident associations from across the country came out against the party for its numerous recalls of Councilors and MP’s and warned of repercussions going forward.
