Land barons who illegally settled people will bear the cost of their resettlement when they are removed, a government official has said.
Responding to questions in Parliament Local Government Deputy Minister Marian Chombo said if it were Councils or government itself the same measure will apply.
Chombo said illegal settlements are, “rampant across the country where people have taken it upon themselves to settle themselves illegally”.
She said government has come up with an inter-ministerial taskforce to address the issue.
The Inter-Ministerial Committee was set up to address the dysfunctional settlement issues that are cropped all over the country.
“We have been going through the 10 Provinces to make sure that we identify where all those dysfunctional settlements are.
“There is a programme that is being drawn up to make sure that we identify who settled those people there.
“Was it the land barons?
“Was it the Local Authority or was it us Ministry of Local Government and Public Works?
“First and foremost, we have to identify a place to move those people to and the cost of moving them is going to be borne by either one of them”, she said.
Chombo explained that, “if they settled themselves on that ground, then it means that they will bear the cost of moving.
However, “central Government is trying to make sure that all those people who illegally settled themselves on those dysfunctional settlements are well settled.
The program is set to be done and finished before the rain season begins according to Chombo.
