Chitungwiza’s Deputy Housing Director Alex Mukweva has become the latest Council official to be nabbed for illegal land deals in the dormitory town.
Mukweva was arrested this week by ZACC and appeared in court where he has since been released on bail.
He is also being accused of demanding $US250 to sign offer letters.
Mukweva is alleged to have prejudiced genuine home-seekers on the waiting list by removing them and replacing them with those who would have paid him kickbacks.
To conceal the corruption, it is alleged that the Chitungizwa town council official would then back-date the offer letters in a bid to conceal his misdeeds.
Residents Up In Arms
Asked for a comment on the ongoing illegal parcelling out of land in Chitungwiza, Chitungwiza Residents Trus(Chitrest) Director Alice Kuvheya had no kind words regarding the matter.
“As residents we are not happy with the way council is parcelling out land.
“We are witnessing houses, shops, service stations being built everyday despite the fact that there is a government directive which bars Chitungizwa from parcelling out land and issuing offer letters ,”fumed Kuvheya.
She was also critical on the justice delivery system on the handling of high profile corruption cases.
“We no longer have confidence in the justice system of this country because the arrests of corrupt public officials amount to nothing as most of them are walking scot-free.
“There is the need to ensure that justice prevails for those who would have lost their hard-earned cash because of these corrupt council officials”.
“What also boggles the mind is that our elected Councillors who should be guarding against such things are involved,” she added.
Chitungizwa is among the most corrupt local authorities where land barons, with the blessing of council bigwigs and councillors, are ‘feasting’ on any piece of land they can lay their hands on.
