Government has dismissed accusations constantly peddled by opposition politicians that the ruling ZANU PF is negatively influencing Town Clerks.
In a statement during a House of Assembly debate Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe said the technocrats were under the control of Councils.
Kazembe was responding to a question from Chegutu legislator Dexter Nduna.
Nduna queried government policy regarding “Clerks who do not perform well but instead perform dismally and not according to the performance contract”.
“Town Clerks work under the supervision of the councils and the councils,” Kazembe responded.
“Town Clerks, their performance is supervised by local councils.
“Those obviously determine their contract and their expectations in as far as their performance is concerned”, he added.
The country’s main opposition MDC Alliance has constantly accused ZANU PF of influencing the Town Clerks as it has no control of Councilors who are shared among MDC Alliance and MDC-T.
The opposition says by influencing the Council management, ZANU PF has circumvented Councilors and passed through resolutions and decisions which have harmed the image of the opposition.
Late last year the parties had public clashes over who had authorised the demolition of over 200 houses in Budiriro with both sides absolving themselves of blame.
