In the Germany war movie Downfall, Hitler rages that he will not allow for anything to remain standing after his death.
The failure of his National Socialism dream will drag with it every last civilian as the Russsians draw near Berlin and his drab bunker.
No Honour in Defeat
The combination of ZANU PF and MDC have lately begun exhibiting a similar mentality in the fight to control and in 2023 win the capital Harare.
None of the two is willing to concede ground based on sincerity, principle or honour.
They are all willing to go out in a blaze of kamikaze self-pride dragging the vast wasteland that is Harare after them.
The politics being displayed by both parties is seriously lacking every vestige of dignity and underpinned by state media and the vast army of social media cyber assassins, they have massed against each other ready to scorch Harare to its last wetland and pothole.
First was the Uchena Land Commission and the report it produced which simply disappeared.
Despite the clarity it brought, naming the culprits, laying out the recommendations and a way forward, the Executive simply took the report and stashed it away.
All electoral promises by President Mnangagwa which it could have assisted have gone to waste and the man himself is unmoved, resolute in spewing more rhetoric and promises.
Then the massive corruption at Town House, previously filled with Alliance Councilors.
The opposition simply has failed to stamp its ground against corruption and Chamisa’s much-vaunted anti-corruption panel led by lawyer Thabani Mpofu has become a whimsical hyphen in a rambling composition of no purpose.
The party has effectively done nothing to convince about its fight against corruption.
Politics Without Principles
The common theme in the two actions between Chamisa and Mnangagwa has been a fear to ruffle those they feel are on their side.
An utter lack of principle, purpose and vision for the country.
Mnangagwa stashed away the Uchena report and Chamisa stood and watched as Town House became a cesspool of corruption.
Budiriro demolitions were the ultimate Isaac-sacrifice of the helpless as the two, like the mighty deity and his fanatic bickered and negotiated whilst the actual victims suffered in the open, their homes demolished.
Neither party took responsibility in a brazen show of how local politics is a savage ghetto of surviving by any and all means.
Chamisa went on a PR offensive visiting the victims whilst Mnangagwa simply spouted more attritional venom and threatened illegal interventions in Council business.
In all this mess the victims of land barons, whose cases Mnangagwa hid away in the stashed report and whose partners Chamisa has allowed safe passage, have continued suffering.
This week another list of over 11000 houses facing demolition in Chitungwiza surfaced.
Already there are signs of the refusal to be principled as the political actors are already making moves to deny responsibility and emerge as the better political option instead of simply doing the right things.
Desperate homeseekers have been losing on all sides.
They have been swindled by land barons who have fake stamps from corrupt Council officials and they have seen their houses demolished by the same Council.
The government that is supposed to provide overarching direction has only provided more confusion whilst exhibiting a limited and immature handle on the situation.
No side has been able to grow-up and act responsible enough in the fight for Harare as 2023 draws near.
Both parties are willing to let the fire go on and burn the city down.
Like the bedraggled Hitler hunkered down in his bunker facing defeat and humiliation, they are ready to go out with everyone else.
