Marimba houses which illegally connected themselves to the City Council water system are set to be charged penalties for tempering with the infrastructure.
In the future Council has proposed jail terms as a punitive measure.
Council recently carried “investigations on forty-two (42) houses wherein it was discovered that eight (8) stands being stand numbers 283, 284, 306, 308, 309, 379, 386 and 388 in New Marimba Park were illegally connected to Council’s water mains”.
“Since there were no water meters, quantification of stolen water from direct connections could not be established”.
Council has since recommended that due to loss of revenue, the Acting Finance Director “should charge a penalty of ZWL$3 450.00 on each of the
tenants for illegal water consumption”.
Authorities however feel that there should be a review upwards of the tariff for illegal water connection so as to deter would be offenders.
The Acting Chamber Secretary has since been requested to look into the by-law with a view to recommend to the Attorney General to make it a mandatory jail sentence for tempering with Council water infrastructure as is the case
