The allocation of residential stands at Harare Council is yet to resume following the arrest of members of the Housing Committee.
The Housing Committee was chaired by Councilor Hammy Madzingira and has been at the centre of land scandals that have already seen the arrests of Harare Mayor Herbert Gomba, Housing Director Addmore Nhekairo and 14 others.
The other members of the Committee include six councillors, Lovemore Makuwerere, Hammy Madzingira, Costa Mande, Warlord Chakaredza and Anthony Shingadeya, arrested and accused of parcelling out large tracts of city land illegally.
Revelations from the last Full Council show that business is yet to resume due to the arrests.
“Council enquired progress on the resumption of operations of the Housing Allocations Section of the Department of Housing and Community Services.
“The Acting Director of Housing and Community Services advised that no documents had been returned and that operations of the Housing Allocations Section had accordingly not resumed.
Council has since expressed concern that the operations of the Department of Housing cannot be suspended indefinitely.
It has since advised that files and documents taken by the Harare Metropolitan Police be returned so as to facilitate the resumption of work in the Housing department.
