Harare has a safe supply of water capable of covering 18 months according to the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement Dr Anxious Masuka.
In a statement presented in Parliament this week the official said more still needs to be done.
Reduce water losses
“There is a need for rehabilitation of distribution network to water losses (60%)”.
“There is also a need to improve management of effluent discharges into the water sources estimated at 145ML/day.
“Construction of Kunzvi and Musami Dam by 2022 and 2025 respectively is required to augment water to the City by 600ML/day”.
The situation is generally the same for other places such as Bulawayo and Gweru.
Safe supply of water
“Bulawayo water sources are at 22% full which can last the City for 11 months.
In comparison Mutare City has 14 months water cover at 97ML/day of water supply left from the Odzani Dams which is being augmented through pumping from the Pungwe River.
Osborne dam can also supply the City if a treatment plant is constructed.
The existing sources are adequate up to 2030.
With the rain season a few months away many cities across the country have enough to sustain themselves.
