Mayor Blessing Thandi is the Councilor for Ward 14 Chikanga and was sworn as Mayor in September 2018.
He is deputised by Councilor Tinashe Chisango.
Thandi Defeated a ZANU Candidate
As an MDC Alliance candidate Thandi garnered 3394 votes and defeated Wellington Jonah Moyo of Zanu-PF who had 1435 votes, Nhamo Adamu of ZIPP with 99 votes, Elijah Taremeredzwa Matongo of APA with 81 votes and Joyful Tarenda of PRC with 20 votes.
The Mutare Mayor has been known to be a crusader against corruption most famously in the Shitazburg Enterprises case.
The company was given a US$330 000 deposit after being awarded a US$660 000 tender to replace old and smaller pipes with larger ones in the Dangamvura water project.
The Mayor alleged corruption in the 2010 deal and later investigations resulted in multiple arrests and dismissals of officials from Council.
He has however also been at the end of residents anger after defending council’s resolutions to buy the Mayor and Town Clerk Joshua Maligwa each a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
He alleged that this would improve the City’s status.
Under Thandi, Mutare revenue for Council has also plummeted, like for many Councils, which has blamed on the Covid crisis.
Authorities have revealed the border city’s revenue collections have plummeted to just 20 percent of the normal figures due to the current national lockdown period.
Thandi will present on these and other common issues plaguing Councils.
