Thokozani Khupe’s MDC-T has extended its fight for the control of the country’s biggest opposition party by recalling 4 Councilors from the Harare City Council.
The 4 Councilors are Denford Ngadziore Ward 16, Grisot Mandere Ward 44, Jaison Kautsa Ward 37 and Tonderai Chakeredza Ward 31.
A letter by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works July Moyo informed the Town Clerk of the recall of the Councilors.
“I wish to inform you that I am in receipt of a letter from the Movement for Democratic Change stating that Cllr D Ngadziore Ward 16, Cllr Grisot Mandere Ward 44, Cllr Jaison Kautsa Ward 37 and Cllr Tonderai Chakeredza Ward 31 have been expelled from that party”.
“In terms of Section 278 (1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, as read with Section 129 (1)k, Ward 16, Ward 44, Ward 37 and Ward 31 of Harare City Council are now vacant”.
“In terms of Section 121 of the Electoral Act please inform the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) of the vacancies”, it said.
However in a social media message to his constituency a defiant Ngadziore said he has no regrets about his stance, to continue supporting MDC Alliance, which is led by Nelson Chamisa.
“You voted for me as your Councilor under MDC Alliance”.
“This (recall) did not come as a surprise to me and I am not regretting as you are the ones who gave me the mandate through MDC Alliance.
“I will continue providing the necessary leadership at community level till such a time we meet again”, he said.
The recalls by the Khupe faction of the MDC have previously been isolated to Parliament where a number of legislators have been removed.
It remains to be seen how things will go as ZEC has already stated that all elections and by-elections have been suspended due to Covid19.
