Mt Pleasant Golf Club President Ngoni Mudzamire has revealed how they were ambushed into a 24 hour deal requiring US$2 million for Stand 402 before Council sold it to another private individual for ZWL$26 million.
The stand raised public anger after revelations that Council had earmarked the golf course for residential stands.
Whilst dismissing the stands issue Mudzamire however revealed that it had been sold to a private developer for recreational purposes at a strangely much lower fee than the one which they had been told by the authorities.
“The City decided to sell Stand 402 Vainona Township. They first wrote to the Mt Pleasant Sports Club so that they could exercise their right of first refusal which they could not exercise at the time because they did not have the money”.
“City of Harare offered us the stand at US$2 million which was to be paid within a 24 hour deadline”.
“When we failed to raise the US$2 million in 24 hours Council then sold the property to another developer at a price of ZWL$26 million”, he revealed.
Mudzamire said what this means for the local community is that all the proposals which were happening with respect to housing development got overtaken by this sell.
Justifying the transaction Councilor Jacob Mafume said Council was under pressure to get money due to the economy’s inflationary changes.
“The pressures on the City Council for purchases of open spaces of land is huge.
“There is too much liquidity in the market, the inflationary pressures has created a lot of people with huge bank balances who are willing to pay almost anything for any piece of land”.
“Then you have a Council that is under pressure in terms of funding issues, it can hardly stay afloat. The whole economy has dolllarised and Council is the only entity that is left without dollarizing”, he said.
The number of shady land deals at Council has raised alarm and this week 14 Directors were arrested in a US$1 million land scam.
They are due to appear in Court this week.
