The Chairman for Epworth Local Board Batanai Masunda together with two other Epworth Councillors has officially crossed the floor to Thokozani Khupe-led faction ditching Nelson Chamisa.
Batanai Masunda is the Councillor for Ward 6 whilst Joshua Chinonyengerwa leads Ward 1 and Gift July is for Ward 3.
The Councillors said that they had decided to join the Thokozani Khupe led faction as a way of continuing the people’s mandate since they were just elected in 2018.
“We are at a critical stage as Councillors as we are just halfway to fulfilling our mandate and we cannot risk giving away that mandate. The Supreme Court gave its order and as party leaders, we have to support that directive,” wrote Masunda in an MDC Alliance Whatsapp group before exiting followed by the other two councillors.
Reached for comment the legislator for Epworth Ethridge Kureva said it was official that the trio had left the MDC Alliance to join hands with Thokozani Khupe.
“Its official that the three of them have left the party and as MDC Alliance we are now left with two councillors in Epworth,” Kureva said.
OpenCouncilHRE also contacted Ward 1 Councillor Joshua Chinonyengerwa who could neither confirm or deny that he had crossed the floor but rather insisted on knowing where this reporter had got information.
“Who told you about that and this is a wrong platform to ask me about that,” fumed Chinonyengerwa.
But when quizzed further whether the information was true ,the Ward 1 councillor became evasive.
In the 2018 general election ,5 councillors won under the MDC Alliance ticket.
Kuda Chatambudza and Toby Sithole are the remaining Councillors who have chosen to stick with Nelson Chamisa.
Insider sources within the MDC Alliance leadership however said the Epworth LocaL Board chairman was being investigated by the Thabani Mpofu-led Integrity and Accountability Panel over some corrupt activities which involved him and members of the Ward development committee.
Epworth residents accuse Masunda of illegally selling stands at the expense of residents on the waiting list and by defecting to the Khupe faction, he doesn’t want to answer to the investigations being instituted against him by MDC Alliance .
This publication made strenuous efforts to reach out to the accused Masunda but he was not forthcoming.
