Harare Mayor Herbert Gomba has increased speculation that he may have shifted sides after disclosing that he will attend any meeting at Harvest house.
Harvest House is currently the official residence of the Thokozani Khupe led MDC-T whilst Nelson Chamisa’s MDC Alliance has shifted to new offices near Africa Unity Square.
Speaking to this reporter on Wednesday Gomba was evasive and refused to come clean on where he stands in the current party divisions though he denied receiving any recall correspondence.
Gomba dismissively said “You know my party” when asked what his position was pertaining to the recent frictions.
“Any meeting that is held at Harvest House I will attend but as of now I have not attended any caucus by the Mwonzora group. I do not attend caucus meetings for MP’s”
Gomba said “we are guided by the whipping system and I will follow what the Chief Whip tells us”.
The Mayor adamantly refused to come clean on which side of the political divide he stands.
However, Mabelreign Councilor Denford Ngadziore was explicit in stating his position in the matter and said he would side with Chamisa.
Writing on social media the young politician stated that he wasn’t afraid of being recalled.
“Dear Thoko and Dougie, I would want to make it clear that am not afraid of being recalled by you.
“If ever you are going to recall me it should be known that I am not going to regret my decision to support the MDC Alliance and President Advocate Nelson Chamisa”, he said.
Speculation has been rife this week that MDC-T is set to recall some Councilors as it seeks to rein control of the biggest opposition party.
The information stated that the Khupe faction had submitted the names for recall to the Minister of Local Government July Moyo though confirmation couldn’t be gotten as to the factuality of this.
Some of the names alleged to be set for recall are Herbert Gomba Ward 27, Denford Ngadziore Ward 16, Lovemore Makuwere Ward 24, Hammy Madzingira Ward 10, Kudzai Kadzombe Ward 41, Jaison Kautsa Ward 37 and Girisoti Mandere Ward 45.
The others are Costa Mande Ward 14, Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi Ward 19, Tonderai Chakeredza Ward 31, Gaudencia Marera Ward 32, Happymore Gotora Ward 7 and Gilbert Hadebe Ward 39.
MDC-T Secretary General Douglas Togarasei Mwonzora has previously warned that they will recall any Councilors who join other political parties.
Addressing members of the media during a press briefing at Harvest House recently, the politician said they will be dealing with issues case by case.
“(Councilors) As well as Members of Parliament who have joined other political parties. We are going to proceed with this but we will deal with this on a case by case basis.
“We are not a vindictive leadership’.
“We are not there to cause misery to people, we are there to safeguard the interest of the members of the MDC”.
“So those who have joined other political parties cannot continue to represent our members”, he said.
