The High Court has ordered Chitungwiza Municipality to acquire Personal Protective Equipment (PPE’s) for its staffers at municipality owned medical clinics.
This follows industrial action by Chitungwiza nurses demanding PPEs to enable them to work during this period of COVID-19.
However according to Chitungwiza Town Clerk Tonderai Kasu all Chitungwiza clinics are now being run by central government and Council feels central government should provide the recquired PPE’s as per the High Court order.
“The High Court ruled that Chitungwiza Municipality is only responsible for provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to its non-health staff.
“This is because, since the central government has taken over the Municipality’s health facilities, using provisions of the Civil Protection Act, it is now the central government that is responsible for providing Personal Protective Equipment to front line health staff,” he said.
He added that during this COVID-19 municipality has also failed to realise enough revenue to tackle other expenses which includes buying PPE’s
“The Municipality has not been able to collect revenue in an adequate or meaningful way because of the lock down, but we have been prioritizing the few available resources to funding essential services, including provision of Personal Protective Equipment for our staff, and this is the approach we will continue to take going forward.” he added.
Chitungwiza Municipality runs four clinics — Makoni (Seke North), Zengeza, St Mary’s and Unit L (Seke South), which is a proposed COVID-19 isolation centre.
