Chitungwiza Ward 21 Councilor, Kudakwashe John, has been arrested for questioning the unilateral confiscation of products in recent police operations against vendors and butcheries.
Police in Chitungwiza have been targeting areas like Makoni Shopping Centre, Huruyadzo Shops and Chigovanyika where most vendors operate from.
According to a resident, Tendai Ndaro – who witnessed the incident – the Councilor only asked why they were taking goods and wares from vendors as well as forcing butcheries to close when he got arrested.
“They were forcing butcheries to close and taking goods and wares from vendors, which prompted Councilor John to question that, and he was immediately arrested (sic),” Ndaro said.
Ndaro accompanied John to Makoni Police Station, where no charges were levelled against the councillor.
“We are at Makoni Police station and no charge has been preferred against him,” Ndaro added.
Chitungwiza and Manyame Rural Residents Association spokesperson Brighton Mazhindu blasted the ZRP for acting in such a way.
“It is embarrassing that ZRP has decided to arrest a policymaker who knows what should be done when operations like this are taking place. Such operations should be done by the Municipal Police, not by ZRP,” Mazhindu said.
Mazhindu has also called for the immediate release of John.
“The Police should release Councilor John unconditionally as he was working within his jurisdiction,” he said.
