The Harare City volleyball team which will participate in the regional Zone 6 Championships in December is set to gobble over RTGS 600 000 a few weeks after Council promised to cut off support for sporting activities.
The games are to be hosted in Lilongwe, Malawi from the 13th to 22nd December.
Information and Publicity Committee minutes of 30th October 2019 stated that their Committee had considered a confident report (21st October 2019 circulated with the Agenda) by the Town Clerk which recommended the granting of authority for the team to participate at the event.
Chamber Secretary Charles Kandemiiri said he believes that the participation of the team will promote the city’s tourism and attract potential investors.
“The participation by the City of Harare would enhance Harare as a destination market in respect of tourist arrivals and investment,” he said.
The minutes, however, noted concerns by Harare Mayor Hebert Gomba who was not comfortable with the budget as he saw it as too high and hoped that sponsors would foot the bill.
As a fundraising mechanism, the Council has since considered hosting dinner from which it expects to raise at least $300 000.00.
Recently Mayor Hebert Gomba announced that the Council is going to cut funding from Harare City Football club as it implements its own austerity measures due to an acute economic environment.
